In 1853, Charles Dickens took to the stage for the first time to read from A Christmas Carol, and so began what was to become one of the most-talked theatrical phenomena of the Victorian age.

It was a series of readings that would include extracts from many of his most famous works, and which would confound audiences' expectations on both sides of the Atlantic right through until 1870, when the demands of performing the terrifying Sykes & Nancy against doctors orders were to hasten his demise.

Never before had a single actor brought such a rich tapestry of humanity to life in a single evening - as a critic wrote, ‘Mr. Dickens is the greatest reader of the greatest writer of the age'.
