'Surely all God's children should be welcomed into his house?'
With so many rural communities currently up-in-arms about the potential closure of their church, and yet so few people actually attending church services, award-winning playwright Brendan Murray has set out to discover what people really mean when they say that the Church is at the heart of village life, and what it really means to be a Christian in the 21st Century.
Entertaining Angels, written especially for New Perspectives, tells the compelling story of a rural parish in decline, a parish priest facing both a crisis of faith and the collapse of his marriage, and the strange figure who arrives in the village one day, seemingly with an answer to everyone's prayers.
Like much of Brendan's work, this play has grown out of research in and amongst the communities he's writing about - in this case a series of interviews with clergy, parishioners and other interested parties about the state of the Church Of England within rural communities. It promises to be a powerful and thought-provoking evening of theatre.
