The Falling Sky

Twelve extraordinary months in the life of an English village.

When journalist Caroline Bishop swaps the city desk for village life, she's clear it's a fresh start she's looking for - peace and quiet, back to basics, sustainability - something more traditional! But then she meets her new neighbours and starts asking questions, and nothing is ever quite the same again.

Brendan Murray's absorbing drama of rural life - the passing of the seasons, the end of an era - based on interviews he conducted in villages - was first performed on a regular rural tour in 2007.

Now New Perspectives has taken a top-notch cast, featuring Stephanie Cole, Julian Glover & Amanda Root, as well as two members of the original cast, into a recording studio to create a brand new audio version of this fascinating play, specially designed to be listened to as part of a guided walk around your village - a captivating drama played out in familiar surroundings - a unique opportunity for rural community audiences to experience this original and absorbing new approach to touring theatre.

Brendan Murray’s The Falling Sky, in its latest staging by New Perspectives Theatre Company, is a piece of theatre which really does become part of the community. With the audience led through the streets and bridleways of a village, in this case Aslockton in Nottinghamshire, by means of map and iPod telling the story, a marriage of radio play and evocative setting combine to make something very special. The play looks at a year in the life of a rural community, with the arrival of Caroline, a high-flying London journalist making the village home, and explores how her interference in village affairs affects the delicate balance. Whilst set here, Murray’s piece examines, in the broadest sense, the state of the nation and talks widely about issues which do not only affect those living in the green belt: organic versus intensive farming, mental health, Afghanistan and the hunting ban all get an airing but in a truly intergenerational way. The recording has a top cast, including Stephanie Cole and Julian Glover, and the calibre of the actors is instrumental to its success. Few criticisms can be levelled, however John – whose character seems as tied to the land of the village as the landmarks we see when on our walk – is estranged from the rural English setting through his Irish accent, and the opening of the piece was too monologue heavy without properly setting up characters. This said The Falling Sky is a wonderful two hours spent walking and taking in a community. The direction on the part of Daniel Buckroyd at New Perspectives in the logistics and planning of the walk is impeccable, the serendipitous encounters on this however are entirely the audience’s own making this experience one which is highly personal, brilliantly uplifting and startlingly real.

“Great way of listening to a play and exploring a place whilst using a setting like a village as a backdrop, great story lines and good reflection of village life. I would like to listen to more plays in this way.”
