Toured Autumn / Winter 2003

A timeless new play for the English winter

When Icicles Hang by the Wall is the perfect example of a funny, touching and quintessentially English retelling of the Cinderella story.

When the new-born child from his Lordship’s house is pitched into the lives of a small group of villagers one tragic winter’s night, an extraordinary tale of courage and friendship is about to unfold for Joan, Marion, Tom and Dick.

As the tale unravels audiences are taken on a journey through a sumptuous ballroom, frosted fields and the warm hearth of a humble country cottage. The text is brought to life by five travelling players who will transform village halls with a blend of original music, unusual song and enchanting storytelling.

When Icicles Hang by the Wall is a new commission for the East Midlands and is written by award winning writer Mike Kenny. Inspired by Shakepeare’s winter song

and fused with the magic and mayhem of mumming, Mike Kenny has created a beautiful play for audiences of all ages.
