INTEGRATED THEATRE COMPANY UNANIMA GETS A NEW PERSPECTIVE
Every year Nottingham based national touring theatre company New Perspectives supports the development of one of the East Midland's many self-starting theatre companies and artists. This year the company will be supporting Mansfield based Unanima Theatre.
New Perspectives will provide a year of guidance and advice, grounded in over 40 years of experience as a producing theatre company. The highly tailored programme will cover anything from artistic and dramaturgical work, business skills or practical advice on touring and rural touring, depending on the needs of the company. Unanima will also receive a block of rehearsal/workshop space, located on site at New Perspectives offices.
Unanima Theatre is an integrated theatre company of adults with and without a Learning Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Down Syndrome. Via a professionally led devising process, they make autobiographical community theatre performances, their most recent show being Love. Life. No Sat Nav, in June 2015. The company was established in 2008 by Creative Producer Tracy Radford, who recognised that adults with learning difficulties and young people have very little opportunities to meet or collaborate. Creative Director Jayne Williams joined the team to oversee the creation of a theatre piece with these groups, discussing themes important to the company. Since 2008 the company has continued to grow, and New Perspectives is enthusiastic to be involved in the next steps of this initiative's journey.
Jayne and Tracy of Unanima Theatre said,
"We are thrilled to be Associates and are exited for the opportunities this partnership will bring. We're eager to soak up the wealth of knowledge and experience that NP have to offer from their four decades of artistic success and are very proud that this partnership has been created in direct response to our recent play Love. Life. No Sat-Nav. New Perspectives' investment in an integrated company like Unanima highlights the shift in recognition of the artistic quality that can and is being created by artists with a learning disability."
Executive Director of New Perspectives, Sally Anne Tye, remarked about the new Association,
"I was privileged to see Unanima in action recently at the Minster School in Southwell and whilst inspired by the creative process and artistic integrity my overriding passion is to support Unanima in developing a sustainable model and to help enable the company to grow. In doing so this will create wider opportunities for young adults with a spectrum of disabilities and at the same time educate audiences by sharing their unique creative spirit."
