New Perspectives to co-produce world premiere with Nottingham Playhouse
17 June 2016
Award-winning crime writer, John Harvey's adaptation of his bestseller, the final and 12th DI Charlie Resnick novel, Darkness, Darkness, commissioned by New Perspectives and Nottingham Playhouse, is to premiere in the detectives' home city as a highlight of the Nottingham Playhouse Sweet Revenge Season this autumn. Darkness Darkness is to run at Nottingham Playhousefrom 30 September - 15 October 2016.
DI Charlie Resnick, has one more case before retirement when DI Catherine Njoroge convinces him to join her team, following the discovery of the body of Jenny Hardwick. The young woman had disappeared during the bitterly-fought miners' strike 30 years earlier. This discovery re-ignites political and personal tensions reawakening a past that was neither buried or forgotten.
Darkness, Darkness displays award-winning novelist John Harvey's 'great gifts for sharp but compassionate characterisation' (The Telegraph). His tense, contemporary crime thriller promises to be a poignant and compelling production at the Playhouse. On his first stage adaptation John Harvey said,
"It was the excitement of the then newly opened Nottingham Playhouse that first brought me to the city in the mid-60s; the prospect of seeing one of my Resnick novels dramatised on that same stage so many years later is truly exciting and a perfect way of squaring the circle."
Artistic Director of New Perspectives, Jack McNamara continued,
"New Perspectives is very excited to be working with two major Nottingham institutions on this production: Nottingham Playhouse and the crime writer John Harvey. The Charlie Resnick books take us into the darker recesses of the Nottingham we know, and now for the first time we are able to bring this world to a live audience in the city that inspired it. Yet Darkness Darkness is more than a crime story; it is the story of a time that continues to haunt our region and the human cost of fighting for a better world."
