Internationally renowned disabled performance artist to visit Nottingham for rare masterclass and performance

04 April 2017

One of Europe's most distinctive performance artists comes to Nottingham in May to create and perform a new work in collaboration with New Perspectives Theatre Company.

Thibault Delferiere, a performer and painter who has cerebral palsy, will collaborate with New Perspectives' Artistic Director, Jack McNamara, to create a new performance piece inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus which will be premiered at a Pay-What-You-Decide event at Surface Gallery, Sneinton at 7.30pm on 22 May 2017.

According to the Greek myth, Sisyphus is condemned to roll a rock up to the top of a mountain, only to have the rock roll back down to the bottom every time he reaches the top. Delferiere will use his body, paint and objects to explore how the futility of Sisyphus' punishment relates to the daily challenges of life with a unique body. Controlled physicality and a masterful command of the environment will be the hallmarks of this rare and captivating work-in-progress performance by Thibault Delferiere. The piece will be accompanied by live music from Sicilian guitarist Giuseppe Lomeo.

Delferiere takes up residence at New Perspective's rehearsal room in Basford a week prior to the performance, where he will run a masterclass for all artists (of all disciplines) aged 18+ living or working in the East Midlands on Sat 20 May.  Artists will learn techniques for managing relationships between the performer and a single object, and learn first-hand about creating visceral theatre from the ground up.

A strong feature of New Perspectives' work is the flexibility, adeptness and openness to making a range of work; from a classic drama or children's play to a more formal experimental project. Delferiere's visit to Nottingham continues the company's commitment to working with exceptional international artists and will help inform ongoing thoughts about making disability-led work for the small scale.

Jack McNamara said: "Thibault Delferiere's work is unlike anything I have ever seen. Over years of deep and fearless exploration of his own body and condition, he has managed to create a masterful performance style that communicates great power through the simplest means. Any artist interested in working with time, space, movement or the body can learn a huge amount from this exceptional artist. I was therefore intent both on collaborating with him myself and also bringing him into contact with the range of exciting artists from our region. Delferiere works across disciplines and so we hope his visit will bring together artists from varied backgrounds bound by the desire to push their practise and stretch their imaginations".

Thibault Delferiere's collaboration is part of New Perspectives' wider Emerging Perspectives Programme - an annual series of events designed to support artists and writers living and working in the East Midlands, giving them invaluable experience in the arts industry and working with leading industry professionals. All donations received from the Pay-What-You-Decide event will go towards funding this programme.
